Vernon Arthur "Jake" Thies (born April 1, 1926, at St. Louis, Missouri) is a retired American professional baseball player. A right-handed pitcher, his decade-long career (1947–1956) included 34 games played with the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball in 19541955. Thies stood 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 m) tall and weighed 170 pounds (77 kg). He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Thies spent the entire 1954 campaign with the Pirates, appearing in 33 of his 34 total Major League games that season — 18 as a starting pitcher. He registered three complete games, including a three-hit shutout on August 13 against the Philadelphia Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium.[1] Thies compiled only a 3–9 record for the last-place Pirates that season, although his earned run average of 3.87 was second-best on the team (behind Dick Littlefield's 3.60).[2]

Thies started one game for the 1955 Bucs, at Forbes Field on April 17, but gave up five runs (though only two were earned) in 3⅔ innings against the Brooklyn Dodgers. It was his only Major League appearance of the season, and the last of his career. Thies worked 134 MLB innings and gave up 125 hits and 52 bases on balls, striking out 57.
